If I didn't join sehat@yahoogroups.com, Fabio would have been taking lots of antibiotics by now.
Most Doctors in Indonesia never follow the standard guideline. I have made it a habit now to always go www.mayoclinic.com everytime one of us falls sick and www.medicastore.com to check what kind of medicine we have prescribed. If I don't think the Doctors I visit is not following the standard guideline than I will just toss his prescription to the rubbish bin. If you asked parents who took their children to the Doctor when he/she has developed fever for 1-2 days, 95% of them will be diagnostic with sore throat and was prescribed with antibiotic.
Fabio has been dealt with fever 4-5X now since I put him in Daycare but all of them are from common colds and he bounced back nicely with paracetamol only - no antibiotics or flu/cough medicine.
When Adi was down with fevers couple months a go and we brought him to the RSPP I was so shocked to see ao many of Medreps waiting for the Doctors! The Doctor diagnosed Adi with typhoid fever and prescribed him a branded medicine.... me, being paranoid, took the prescription to the pharmacy near our house. And asked for the price. Apparently the antibiotic being prescribed was Rp 300K something.... and the generic version was only Rp 30K....!!!!
Re: can we trust the doctors
