We need Jaime Lerner as governor of Jakarta. Below is his presentation at TED, and he came across as a very down to earth person. His presentation is concise, simple, but profound.
Some of my favorite quotes:
- To fix a city, we have to start from teaching the children because they will teach the parents.
- Creativity happens when you cut one zero from the budget.
- We have to work fast because we don't have the whole time to plan. We can't have all the answer. It's important to just start, and contribution from the people is important, because they could teach you when you're not in the right track.
And he sings too, at the end of the presentation.
It's possible, it's possible, you can do it, you can do it!
My neighbor Ioana Vaetoru-Fox bought me a Banana Guard from New Zealand. It's hard. It's big. It's almost manly!

I used to hate bringing a banana in my bag because it would end up looking like Gerber's mashed banana (literally!).
But this time it's different. I can confidently bring a banana in my bag to work, or anywhere else for that matter. I am tempted to carry it in my hand. It feels good. But, what would people say if I keep holding on to this thing? :)
Who would have guessed that Osama contributed to a great piece of music for Obama? This Osama was playing the bass, setting the blues rhythm with Pearl Jam's drummer Matt Cameron, under the direction of Bergevin Brothers and along with many other volunteers, such as the Total Experience Gospel. The hair on the back of my neck stood up when the choir started singing!

Since last week Rani has been in the mood for conditioning my brain before moving to Jakarta as a new professional. One of the many wonderful things she has discovered for me over at the public library is the book Never Eat Alone by Keith Ferrazzi. It is a book which is not only ideal for marketeers/business developers, but also serves as a pragmatic guide for those who want to be useful for people around them.
Rani and I have no house nor car. It's not that we don't need a place to live, but renting a small apartment in Singapore is much more feasible for us. And ever since we moved to Singapore in 2002, the idea of owning private car is no longer important (although, a sailing catamaran remains on our wishlist!).
However, in preparation for our next move to Jakarta, we now have to start thinking about owning or renting/leasing a car. Or borrow one from a kind person who has one car too many? :)
What sort of criteria do I need to set for it? *Not in order of preference.
Following my writing on doctors in Jakarta, I found the story of emergency room doctors in Depok from Sri Sariningdyah
Early this morning at about 7.20am I carried Noe in my arms under an umbrella from our humble home to Queensway, which is the nearest busy road. Normally, I'd walk all the way to his school for a good 1.2 kilometer but it was raining and the grass was soggy so I decided to get a quick taxi ride.
When we passed the Hang Jebat mosque, Noe, with his face facing backward over my shoulder, said, "Ibuuuu...!". Then I asked him, "Where is Ibu? Ibu is at home, Noe...". But he kept pointing at some tree near the mosque's fence. BUt nobody was there! A few steps later, he said it again. I looked again behind us but I still could not see anyone.
